Sinds Lilith – een machtige drakenwisselaar – de rol als profeet van Jakob accepteerde, is de vrede tussen Merzia en Naftalia hersteld. Hoe fragiel die vrede is, blijkt wanneer de erfgenaam van de troon terugkeert naar Nadesj. De jonge koning wil de Jakobanen voorgoed uit zijn rijk verdrijven. Om haar volgelingen te beschermen, moet Lilith worden wat ze altijd heeft gevreesd.
Landvoogd Kiril moet door de terugkeer van de koning een stap terug doen. Hij ziet met lede ogen aan hoe de jongen het land meesleurt in een bloederige strijd, maar door zijn eed aan Merzia en het koningshuis kan hij niet anders dan het zwaard weer oppakken. Pas als het bijna te laat is, beseft hij dat hij is gebruikt in een duister spel.
